Are you or someone you know struggling or dealing with a crisis? 988 can help.

988 is the new number to call or text to reach the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. The three digit number launched this summer and offers free, 24/7 access to crisis care through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Whether it’s thoughts of suicide or a substance abuse crisis, a phone call, chat or text, studies have shown those who call the Suicide Lifeline are significantly more likely to feel less depressed, less suicidal, less overwhelmed and more hopeful after speaking with one of the lifeline’s trained crisis counselors.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the U.S. had one death by suicide every 11 minutes in 2020. In fact, suicide is a leading cause of death for young people ages 10-34.

The U.S. Surgeon General reports that since the pandemic began, rates of psychological distress among young people, including symptoms of anxiety, depression and other mental health disorders have increased. One study found that “In early 2021, emergency department visits in the United States for suspected suicide attempts were 51% higher for adolescent girls and 4% higher for adolescent boys compared to the same time period in early 2019.”

If you’re thinking about suicide, or are worried about a friend or loved one and would like support, people are standing by to help. Just call or text 988 now.
