STEAM

You’ve probably heard the words STEM and/or STEAM tossed around when it comes to your child’s education, but where did this emphasis on Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (STEAM) come from?

When RUSD passed the 2020 referendum, it included an intentional investment in STEAM. This investment aims to improve math and science achievement and provide students with project-based experiences that develop 21st-century skills that will prepare students to transition from a K-12 environment to a professional one. They’re being given the tools they need to evolve into innovators, creators, critical thinkers and more. Plus, students exposed to STEAM education have greater access to college scholarships, a broader array of in-demand job prospects and a higher probability of landing higher-paying careers (see below!).

Racine Unified has two flagship STEAM schools, Red Apple School and The R.E.A.L. School, but students across the district are being taught these same skills in Makerspaces. Makerspaces help our students explore and practice STEAM skills in an environment that encourages creativity, problem-solving and collaboration. From codable robots to 3D printers, and building materials to electric circuits, these spaces are all about hands-on discovery. Makerspaces are currently available in all of RUSD's elementary and K-8 schools.
