Learn about our Dual Language, ESL and Foreign language programs.
Starbuck’s Dual Language program is a bilingual education model that offers instruction in both English and Spanish. Although the majority of participants speak Spanish at home, the program is able to serve both native English and Spanish speaking students simultaneously. A common misconception about bilingual education is that it is “remedial” in nature, which is a damaging myth. Bilingualism is a talent and a gift, not an obstacle to be overcome.
Bilingual education students are held to the same curricular and academic standards as any other student, and many bilingual education students have above average test scores and grades when compared to their peers and/or are gifted and talented. In the Dual Language program at Starbuck, social studies is taught primarily in Spanish and the other core subjects are taught in English with special modifications as necessary to best serve English language learners.
Bilingual education is not the same as English as a Second Language (ESL). ESL is a class, whereas bilingual education is a content delivery model. The classes that form the Dual Language program at Starbuck are English, Language Arts, Science, Social Studies and Math.
The Dual Language program is currently being phased out.
The English as a Second Language (ESL) program at Starbuck Middle School helps students who speak a language other than English at home become bilingual and bi-literate and achieve high levels of success academically, linguistically and socially. The goal of the ESL program is to improve the students' understanding of English. Students enter with various levels of English proficiency. The bilingual and ESL staff are dedicated to helping our students not only reach the RUSD North Star goals but do so as successful bilingual young adults.
Starbuck offers these foreign languages: Spanish and French.
