Julian Thomas Elementary is one of the original school buildings of Racine, WI. It was originally named the Fifth Ward School (1855- 1891), then it was renamed Garfield School (1891-2003). The school was closed for renovations and finally reopened as Julian Thomas Elementary School (2003-Present) named after a local civil rights activist.

Facts about Mr. Thomas

  • Graduated from Park High School in 1952
  • Helped desegregate schools in Racine, WI
  • Inducted into Park’s Hall of Fame in 1977 for outstanding commitment to community service and racial equality
  • Received his Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology from Dominican College
  • President of Racine Chapter of NAACP for 22 years
  • Worked at J.I. Case Tractors for many years
  • Worked at Gateway College as the Vice President
