Fresh Start is a collaborative program between Racine Unified and Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare -All Saints for Racine Unified students. The Fresh Start program is an alternative classroom program that provides support to at-risk students and their families.
How can a student attend the Fresh Start Program?
Students are referred to the program by Racine Unified School District staff. Students who may qualify for the Fresh Start Program have challenges in a traditional classroom environment due to reasons such as:
- Inability to complete a task
- Difficulty establishing/maintaining friendships
- Multiple suspensions
- Poor attendance
- Physical/verbal aggression
The Fresh Start Program helps teach coping skills. These skills, along with involvement of the student’s family, help him or her to develop and maintain healthy behaviors at school and at home.
Who works with students in the program?
- Child Psychiatrist
- Clinical Therapist
- Registered Nurse
- Occupational Therapist and Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant
- Racine Unified School District Teachers
- Educational Assistant
The Fresh Start school day includes lessons with Racine Unified teachers similar to the student’s regular school day. The All Saints staff works with each student and focuses on his or her challenging behaviors. While students are in the Fresh Start Program, regular communication occurs with the child’s home school teachers to discuss the student's progress.
Who is it for? When and where is it?
The Fresh Start Program is offered Monday through Friday for students in first through fifth grade. Kindergarten students may be considered in some circumstances. The program is located at the Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare - All Saints Wisconsin Avenue Campus in Racine. For more information please click here.
