How do the classes work?
Students attend daily synchronous lessons for most courses. When not in a synchronous session, students will login to the online courses and read texts, watch videos, complete practice activities, take quizzes and submit assignments to their teachers. Depending on a student's grade level, they are expected to spend 30-60 minutes a day in EACH course. Teachers are available throughout the day to answer questions and provide help.
Are there quarters, semesters, trimesters?
Courses are a semester in length. However, students may work at their own pace and complete a course early. Or in extenuating circumstances, with administrator permission, courses may be extended for an additional 2 weeks.
When do my classes start?
Classes start for parttime students after completing an online orientation, student courses may begin at almost any time of the year. This is what an asynchronous experience is like when everyone is working at their own pace. Full time students courses start after a face-to-face orientation at the beginning of each semester.
Do I have to provide my own computer? Internet?
The Racine Unified School District provides Chromebooks for all full time virtual students. Internet is not provided.
Am I also enrolled in my home school?
Students in the Racine Unified School District Virtual Program are enrolled in the Racine Alternative Learning school, in the Virtual Program.
Am I still allowed to attend school events such as prom, homecoming, dances, and sporting events?
Absolutely! And if you want to participate in extracurricular activities in your home school, we can arrange that as well, too.
Do I still need to take the ACT, MAP, or other exams required by Racine Unified School District?
Yes. As a student of The Virtual Program at RUSD it is required to come into the building for testing, except under extenuating pre-approved circumstances.
How are classes graded?
Classwork is graded by teachers the same way it is done in the school buildings except grades are provided through percentages.
